It was the British archaeologist Howard Carter (right) who discovered the tomb of the Egyptian pharoah Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. He and his patron, Lord Carnavaron, were the first people to set foot in it in over 3,000 years, "the hot air escaping [causing] the candle to flicker", as Carter's diary recalls.
